James MacDonald
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
You will never have the power to live a full and fruitful godly life until you choose God's Word as your final authority. So let me ask you: Have you made the choice to obey God's Word? Sadly, many people treat the Bible as a sorry substitute for their authority.
Some People Treat the Bible as an Hors d'oeuvres Tray
If Kathy and I came over to your house for dinner, I bet we wouldn't be in the door five minutes and you'd offer us a tray of some hot goodies. I'd look at it and say, "That one looks really good. Aw-that probably has too many calories . . . I want this one."
Many people pick and choose Bible passages based on what suits their taste: "I really like the part in Romans 8 about how much God loves me, and I really like that 2 Corinthians 12 about how 'God's grace is sufficient,' but I'll skip the parts about forgiveness, or repentance, or hell."
The Bible is not your authority as long as you're picking and choosing what you accept.
Some People Treat the Bible like Rental Car Insurance
I would guess that most people waive the extra rental car insurance. The costs are plenty already. I haven't had an accident in ten years. What are the chances that I'm going to have an accident today? Slim. No, I don't need the insurance.
A lot of people treat the Bible like that. In an emergency I need the Bible, but I doubt I'll have a crisis today, so I think I'll pass. Technically, you should get up and spend some time in God's Word, but instead you grab a cup of coffee and rush out the door. I'll probably be OK today without it.
Some People Treat the Bible like a Seat Belt
Of course you wear a seatbelt-but only because it's the law. And that crazy bell won't quit ringing until you click it. If you could get behind the dashboard and rip that bell out, I think you'd wear your seat belt less.
Some people treat the Bible like that. Yeah, I read the Bible because it's the law. And also because I can't get the guilt to quit ringing in my ears if I don't. So to silence the alarm, you spend a few minutes perusing it every day.
Instead of an authority to guide your life, people minimize the Bible by treating it like:
An hors d'oeuvres tray - where you can pick or choose.
Rental car insurance - that you're glad to have, but only in an emergency.
A seat belt - a nuisance that cramps your style.
How sad. If this characterizes your thinking in any way, come back to the priority of God's Word in your life and let it be your authority. -James MacDonald
Your law, LORD, is perfect, reviving the soul; Your testimony, LORD, is sure, making wise the simple; Your precepts, LORD, are right, rejoicing the heart; Your commandment, LORD, is pure, enlightening the eyes. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Amen. (Psalm 19)
What is the Bible to me? How do I know?
Can I think of a time when the Bible changed what I did or what I thought about something?
"An Anointed Fighter who will Fight -4- Christ -4- Eternity"
Psalm 119:103-106
The Bible has an organized structure: it is designed to take readers systematically through God's plan for redeeming mankind from enslavement to sin. The steps include:
Redemption Plan. God foresaw humanity's need of salvation. Therefore, He was laying the groundwork for Jesus Christ's sacrifice, even as He created the world in Genesis 1 and 2 (Eph. 1:4).
Redemption Need. Over the course of the first nine chapters, people clearly demonstrate how much they need to be saved. Wickedness swells until God must intervene with an animal sacrifice (Gen. 3:21), a flood (Gen. 6:13), and forced separation (Gen. 11:9).
Redemption Preparations. The remainder of the Old Testament tells Israel's story. The nation forms and matures with a two-fold purpose: 1) to proclaim Jehovah as the one true God and 2) to receive God's Son Jesus Christ as the Messiah.
Redemption Achieved. The four gospels document the fulfillment of God's plan through Jesus Christ. His death fully pays the penalty for all of mankind's sin.
Redemption Shared. The book of Acts tells of the gospel spreading far and wide.
Redemption Explained. Jesus' followers write epistles--or letters--revealing the Holy Spirit's teaching so that all believers may grow in wisdom.
Redemption Realized. Revelation shows God's faithful followers joining Him eternally in a new heaven and new earth.
Even though God's Word must necessarily be read and studied in pieces, do not forget that it does function as a whole. Once you understand the Bible's outline, you can see how the Lord works in individual books and chapters. All of the diverse elements--law, prophecy, poetry, gospel, epistle, etc.--connect to make one exciting story!
THE ONLY LIMIT TO FAITH
Romans 10:17
Faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ
When people struggle with their faith in God, it's not because their faith-object is insufficient. It's because people have unreal expectations of God. They expect Him to operate a certain way or answer prayer a certain way--their way, not His--and when He doesn't comply they say, "Forget You, God." But God doesn't change; He's the perfect faith-object. Faith in God only fails when people hold a faulty understanding of Him.
If you want your faith in God to increase, you must increase your understanding of Him as the object of your faith. If you have little knowledge about God and His Word, you will have little faith. If you have great knowledge of God and His Word, you will have great faith. Faith cannot be pumped up by coaxing yourself, "If only I can believe! If only I can believe!" Any attempt to push yourself beyond what you know about God and his ways is to move from faith to presumption. You choose to believe God according to what you already know to be true from His Word. And the only way to increase your faith is to increase your knowledge of God, your faith-object (Romans 10:17).
"Well," you may say, "that means there's a limit to our faith." Yes, there's a limit. But God isn't controlling it; you are. As the object of your faith, He is infinite. The only limit to your faith is your knowledge and understanding of God, which grows every time you read your Bible, memorize a new Scripture verse, participate in a Bible study, or meditate on a scriptural truth. Can you see the practical, tangible potential for your faith to grow as you endeavor to know God through His Word? It's boundless!
Furthermore, it is important to know that God is under no obligation to us. There is no way you can cleverly word a prayer so that God must act on your behalf. If God declares something to be true, you simply believe Him and live according to what is true. If God didn't say it, no amount of faith in the world will make it so. Believing doesn't make God's Word true; His Word is true, therefore I believe it.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, In the name of Jesus Christ, increase the boundaries of my faith today as I increase my understanding of You through Your Word.
