Deutsch Nu'uelua Pu'u is a Samoan/ American Mixed Martial Arts Heavyweight Champion. He is a 1995 graduate of Samoana High School in American Samoa and holds a Bachelors degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Chaminade. Puu is a Highly Decorated, Retired Combat Leader and Veteran of the US Army with 9 deployments to Various Theaters to include Uzbekistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and three tours to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Puu was a Patrol Leader in Iraq and was known as a fair and impartial Leader of Soldiers.
Pu'u originally retired after suffering injuries while deployed to Iraq. Which caused him to struggle to keep up with normal daily activities. In 2006 Deutsch was diagnosed with PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and was placed in a Department of Veterans Affairs inpatient program to help him to recover from the Injuries. Puu was also a member of the Wounded Warrior Project.
In 2009 Puu was retired from Active Duty Service. Upon Medically retiring Puu Moved to his homeland of Samoa and opened the first MMA Gym on the Island. Puu introduced MMA to Samoa where the sport was virtually unknown. Puu continued to recover and eventually started training again, this time he focused on Training with and competing in Wrestling earning himself a spot as a competitor and as the Strength And conditioning Coach for Team American Samoa.
In 2010 Puu succesfully coached and competed for Team American Samoa.
Pu'u is the pioneer of MMA To American Samoa and is known as the "Father of MMA" in American Samoa. He is the Head Coach at American Samoa MMA Association's (ASMMAA) BOOYAA Gym He is the first Pro MMA Athlete to train and fight out of American Samoa and is an advocate of the sport into the South Pacific. He operates the Non-Profit BOOYAA Gym in the Islands that is free of charge to anyone whom is willing to learn Wrestling, Boxing, Judo, and or MMA.
In 2010 Puu was selected by the American Samoa National Olympic Committee ASNOC Secretary General Ken Tupua, and American Samoa Boxing Association President Mapu Jamias to become the American Samoa National Boxing Association Head Coach. A position that he decided to turn down due to his involvement in MMA. Pu'u is also the Vice-President of the Samoa Combat Sports Incorporation (SCSI). He is a very active member of the Samoan Community and is constantly finding ways to help athletes free of charge. Pu'u Donates most of his prize money from all of his fights to help fund Olympic Sports and activities and is a positive role model for all! He is a former Member of the Army World Class Athlete Program, the same Program in which UFC Hall of Fame fighter "Randy Couture" was in while in the Army. Deutsch succesfully coached his student Carl Floor to qualify for the 2012 Olympics and will accompany and coach his student to the games.
Today Deutsch is the Chairman for the board of directors of The American Samoa Mixed Martial Arts Association (ASMMAA) a board Member of the American Samoa National Wrestling Association and the American Samoa National Boxing Association.
